Computer Forensics Education and Training

Computer forensics professionals are increasingly in demand. Computer crimes have increased dramatically over the past decade and have become one of the most targeted ways to commit crime. Tens of millions of dollars are lost each year from information stolen from a computer. This has lead to growth in the field of the forensic study of computers

To get a career in the field of forensic study of computers, you typically need a Bachelor's degree in computer forensics or related degree such as computer engineering or information systems security with additional training. Master's degrees, Ph.D.s, and certificate programs are also available for this field.

Forensic computer investigators need a broad range of technical skills and knowledge including computer software, network security, protocols, routing, computer file formats, cryptology, reverse software engineering, diagnostic techniques, and password cracking. In addition to technical skills, experts in the forensic study of computers must have good oral and written communication skills, work under tight deadlines, be detail oriented, and understand and comply with investigation procedures. Professionals in this field have to write detailed reports and may provide testimony in court in criminal cases.

Aspiring computer forensics professionals may specialize in a particular area. For example, if a person specializes in financial crimes, additional coursework in finance and accounting may be required. Some employers are willing to accept industry related experience and equivalent knowledge in place of a forensic study degree.

Aspiring computer forensics professionals can obtain a lot of good information about available jobs on a career website such as indeed.com. By having the stated skills and qualifications employers are looking for, you can be much better prepared to start a career in this field.

Should I Buy a New Computer?

Over time, computers start to slow down and give us trouble. It's tough to tell whether it's hardware or software issues, and paying a technician to look at it and troubleshoot often costs hundreds of dollars.

It's difficult to get a solid opinion on what you should do, and often people are stuck in the middle. You have lots of data on your computer - pictures, email and videos - is your data safe, will your computer crash? This will help you figure out if buying a new computer is right for you, or whether keeping the old one is a better strategy for now.

First - if you don't have a backup of your files, get one. When data is lost, it's gone forever if you don't have a backup. Even just copy your important files to a CD or DVD - have something.

Once you have a backup, you have three choices:

1. Live with the issues (ie - do nothing, wait for the PC to die)
2. Buy a new PC and transfer the data
3. Troubleshoot or format and reinstall your old computer.

Option 1 costs nothing, other than your time dealing with problems, but can lead to data loss if you don't have a backup.

Option 2 will cost more than you think. A brand new, low-end computer can be had for $300 and up. But, this does not include a warranty or software. You might be able to re-use your old software if you have the CDs, but if you don't, add $300 to the price of the computer for software and warranty. Of course you could pass on the warranty, but most people will need Microsoft Office or something, so add at least $200 for that. You will also need someone to help you transfer your files and get everything working - which could cost $150-$300 more. So your $300 computer now cost you between $650-$900.

Option 3 can result in data loss if the person doing the reinstalling does not take care and properly backup the data (assuming you don't have a backup). If you are sure you have a backup, this option will cost $150-$300, and possibly not even fix the problem if it's old hardware failing.

Each situation is different, but what is right for you?

If you have the money, the safe route is to buy a new computer. You can then transfer your files at your leisure, without worrying they will be lost, as they'll always still be on the old computer.

If money is an issue, you might at least invest in a backup solution, and ride it out. If you are a gambler, pay a tech to check it out. But still have a backup before you do this.

What You Should Know About Computer Engineering Jobs

With today's turbulent economy, not all careers are stable and a high percentage of employees employed by big name corporations are being laid off.  With the unemployment rate on a rise, more and more individuals are shifting their focus from full-time employment to full-time schooling.  Computer engineering jobs are very desirable and are one of the most stable jobs to this date because of the nation's heavy reliance on computers and software programs.  Understand the nature of the position and the education and training you must complete and enter a career that is certain during uncertain times.
If you are considering entering the computer engineering workforce, you should have a passion for computers and information technology.  Computer engineers are responsible for developing and maintaining computer software programs that consist of coded instructions spoken in computer language.  While some computer engineering jobs are in government offices and schools, others are found in the manufacturing and engineering industry.  Computer engineers should not only enjoy working with computers, they should also be skilled in mathematics, analysis, and science.
Generally, computer engineers will fall into two different categories: computer software application engineers and computer software systems engineers.  Different knowledge and programming languages are required for each category.  While the education and training students learn will cover both of these topics, you will need to decide which category is more interesting to you when applying for positions.
To become a computer software engineer, you must attend school.  Most employers today will require that applicants have a college education and a degree in computer science and/or software engineering.  While a graduate degree is generally preferred, not all employers require this.  Obtaining a graduate degree will make you more desirable to employers throughout the application process.
Hands on experience in computer engineering is also preferred when applying to big name corporations.  If you are fresh out of college, you may want to consider accepting an internship before applying for computer engineering jobs.  While some employers will hire students fresh out of school, you can expect lower pay until you prove yourself, your knowledge, and your skills.  Once you gain experience, you will be promoted out of a trainee position to a full-fledged computer software engineer.
The salary range for engineering jobs involving computer science will vary depending on where you live and who you are working for.  With a positive outlook in this career, computer engineering has become a popular major in schools today.  Prepare for a better future and begin training to become a computer engineer by enrolling in school and putting in the effort.
